The movie is a remake of the film “Blood Simple” released in 1985 by Ethan and Joel Coen. The events of “A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop” directed by filmmaker Yimou Zhang take place in a remote and neglected town somewhere in western China. In the center of the plot are four personages: gloomy noodle shop owner Wang; his unfaithful wife; Wang’s employee Li, who is also a secret lover of Wang’s wife; and cunning patrol officer called Zhang.
The relations between shy Li and the noodle shop owner’s wife cannot escape the suspicious husband, and soon he decides to get rid of his disloyal wife and her lover. For that purpose Wang hires a local officer Zhang, who is to kill the adulterous couple. Zhang although has his own plans concerning this affair. Thus the seemingly perfect plan of Wang goes awry, resulting cruel and bloody violence…
The film is a new feature from acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou, known by his eminent directional work “Fifth Generation”. The thriller blends dark humor and absorbing twists of plot. Yimou offers the viewer the ironical view on the problem of human relations in the face of great passion, provoking great suspense, and their consequences.
