Milk of Sorrow is a rare disease, transmitted through the breast milk of a mother to a child. The women, who were raped or abused during the pregnancy or soon after that, have a risk to transmit their fears connected with the actions against them to their babies. The plot of the film centers on the life of its main heroine Fausta, who suffers from this illness of fear.
The action takes place in Peru after the terror war, during which many of the women have been mistreated or violated. The mother of Fausta was a victim of the war regime. Now the war is long as over, but her mother’s fears continue living in Fausta’s mind and haunting her constantly. To protect herself from possible sexual harassments, the main heroine follows the ancient traditions of Peruvian women and places a potato into her vagina. She believes that will stop the possible attempts of intruders and prevent her from her mother’s destiny.
The film, written and directed by Claudia Llosa, is a dramatic story with an intricate plot. “The Milk of Sorrow” describes a hard journey from constant fears, hidden deep inside one’s mind to freedom. The film is also a vivid picture of the cruel reality of Peru during the war times.
