The main hero of the film is a spoken word artist Cruz (Kuno Becker), who lives and works in San Francisco. One day he receives a message, calling him back to his parents’ home. His father (Grammy-awarded Ruben Blades), a former schoolteacher, is fatally ill and needs his son’s care badly. Cruz rushes to New Mexico and finds the place bogged down in poverty, violence and drug abuse. While staying there, Cruz gets in touch with Emilio (Miguel Sandoval) – a nightclub owner, who is also a local underworld leader. Seduced by easy money and fast action, Cruz soon gets involved into the dangerous life of the city. As a result his life changes out of all recognition. His voice is no more poetic, his identity is lost and his relations with close ones are almost disrupted. It takes a certain period of time for Cruz to understand all the drama of the situation he has got into. But perhaps it is not too late for him to change back. If only he could cope with himself and get along well with his dying dad and the others…
The dramatic events of the film are centered on the father-son relations. These are uneasy ones, full of contradiction and even confrontation of old and new worlds. But still there are some points of contact, promising the possibility to restore mutual understanding between son and dad.
