The film “Howl” from directors Jeffrey Friedman and Rob Epstein is a biopic of legendary Beat poet Allen Ginsberg. The film is shot in traditions of a documentary, provided by detailed narrative and animation.
Gathered from different moments of life and creative work of Ginsberg, the biopic creates a portrait of a scandalously famous person of that time. It is not only the historical portrait of the charismatic young beatnik, but also a picture of the time he lived in and the generation, he belonged to.
The film centers on the most famous poem of Ginsberg “Howl”, which became the hymn of the lifestyle of the Beat Generation, characterized by desire of journey, love and freedom.
Ginsberg’s poem “Howl” was first read in public on 1955, at San Francisco's Six Gallery. The audience was absolutely stunned by the poem of the young beatnik, so much, that two years later Ginsberg had to defend his greatest work in the court against accusations of obscenity.
Allen Ginsberg is performed by actor James Franco. Bob Balaban stars as judge Clayton Horn; David Strathaim appears in the role of prosecutor Ralph McIntosh.
