“Around a small Mountain” is a biographical picture, dramatic events of which are based on the life of famous writer Raymond Roussel. The film is directed by legendary filmmaker Jacques Rivette, known to the public by his previous works “The Duchess of Langeais” and “Va Savoir”. The biopic is a touching story about lost love, casual encounters and the great power of art.
The main hero of the film is a gallant man called Vittorio. One day he meets Kate. Their meeting happens on a mountain road, where Kate’s car has broken down. Eager to help, polite Vittorio stops his car and fixes the car of a stranger woman. Having never uttered a word, he speeds off, but soon the ways of Kate and Vittorio crosses again.
In the town he gets to know some information about Kate. She turned out a member of her family’s travelling circus, which she returned to join. Kate left the circus many years ago, and the mysterious facts of her sudden disappearance and return puzzled and intrigued Vittorio. He decides to stay in the town for a while and see the show. Then he decides to see the next one. And gradually, step by step, he learns the peculiarities of performers’ lives. The main hero is about to discover the secret of Kate’s life, that forced her to disappear for many years.
