“Happiness Runs” is a psychological drama, directed by Adam Sherman and partly based on the autobiographical events from his childhood. The film touches upon a life within a hippie commune in sixties. The lifestyle of the commune is based on principles of free love, drugs and violence.
The main hero of the story, telling us by Sherman, is Victor, who was born and raised in the commune. Seeing perfectly well disadvantages of the Utopian views, the young man realizes soon, that his own ideas and ideals do not correspond with those of the community. This is the place, where women bodies can be freely used by the guru Insley, who uses his abilities to hypnosis to seduce women and take their possessions. The new generation, who lives in the atmosphere of drugs and polygamy nearly since childhood is really threatening either.
Victor and his girlfriend Becky are going to run from this world, but to do that they need money. For this purpose Victor tries to sell weed, but his attempt to earn money in such a way fails. The guys from the commune, who are also interested in Becky, cut him out. He tries to get money from his mother, but she is also among those, who are deeply influenced by the guru. Besides Becky can’t leave her father, who is near death. Victor has nothing to do but staying with Becky to protect her from the possible violence.
