John Rabe was a German businessman, who won an honor among Chinese in 1937. That year was connected with the period of time under the name “Nanking Massacre”, which lasted around two months and took away many of people’s lives. Japanese soldiers brutally attacked the Chinese population, including women and children. Rabe and his command took great part in the negotiations between China and Japan, resulted by the possibility to protect the innocent Chinese people from the Imperial Army and its actions. Thanks to the German businessman a safety zone was created. Hundreds of thousands civilians ran there, and this place became a last hope for many of them to save their lives. According to the reliable information, Rabe has helped to rescue more than 200,000 people’s lives.
The film describes the dramatic events of the year 1937 and introduces to the audience the brave man, who has rendered great services to China and its civilians. The story of the film is based on the diaries of the businessman, written during that period of time.
John Rabe became a national hero in China, and he is still considered to be the prominent figure in the history of the country, although he has never been awarded inter vivos.
